ANALYSIS OF TECHNICAL EFFICIENCY OF RICE PRODUCTION IN PUNJAB (PAKISTAN) Implications for Future Investment Strategies
نویسندگان
چکیده
The study employed a Stochastic Frontier Production approach to determine the future investment strategies that can enhance the production of rice in Punjab, Pakistan. The data is collected from 200 farmers in the year of 2005 from two Tehsils of Sheikhupura district which is one of the major rice growing districts of Punjab province. The results of stochastic production function indicate that coefficient of pesticide is non significant probably due to heavy pest infestation while fertilizer is found to have negative impact on rice production mainly because of improper combination of N, P, and K nutrients. The improper combination of input use indicates poor dissemination of extension services. Therefore, the role of extension department should be strengthened to enhance the productivity of rice and to protect the major natural resource, ground water for future generations. The results of inefficiency model suggest that investment on tractor (mechanization) could significantly contribute to improve farmer’s technical efficiency, implying that the role of agricultural credit supply institutes (such as banks) needs to be redefined. Rice farmers are 9 percent technically inefficient, implying that little potential exists that can be explored through improvement in resource use efficiency. As a long run strategy, the investment on research related activities should be increased to shift the production technology.

متن کاملProduction Efficiency of Rice Growers in Dinajpur District of Bangladesh
To meet the growing food demand of Bangladesh requires efficiently use of inputs and effectively manage of production practices at the farm level. Thus, the present study aims to measure the technical efficiency and establish core factors affecting boro and aman rice production in Bangladesh. The study employed mainly farm level data collected from 80 farm households selected randomly in Dinajp...
متن کاملNon-Parametric Energy Use Efficiency, Energy Ratio and Specific Energy for Irrigated Wheat Crop Production
In this paper, non parametric Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) was subjected to the energy data of wheat producers in Punjab state, India, and technical, pure technical and scale efficiencies were calculated for farms both category wise and zone wise. The main objective was to determine the strength of the correlation between non-parametric efficiencies and indices such as energy ratio and speci...
متن کاملIntensification of Rice Production Systems in Southeastern Nigeria: A Policy Analysis Matrix Approach
The Nigerian rice sector has made remarkable improvement in the last decade as production has increased significantly thereby reducing the gap between domestic supply and demand. In the last three decades, rice imports make up greater proportion of Nigerian imports as rice forms a structural component of the Nigerian diet. Past government inconsistent policies were not successful in securing go...
متن کاملTemporal Analysis of Rice Yield and Climatic Trends in Pakistan
Climate in its spatial and temporal inconsistency is one of the chief causes for determining agricultural productivity in a region. Climatic impacts should be kept into mind while developing long term agricultural policies. This study aimed at investigating the change in rice production in Pakistan from 1989-2009 using the GIS techniques and the impacts of climate change on rice production. Pak...
